I know a lot of Indians in Alaska and coastal Washington made a political statement in the 50s and 60s by switching their orthography from Cyrillic to Ronan (Extended character sets, neither alphabet has characters for a lot of uvular comsonants, glottal stops, ejectives, certain laterals, etc.) to express disapproval with the Soviet regime.
