Link to the Dad and Dylan d*cks
There is a positively portrayed gay couple in the movie, played by Benedict Wong and Clayton Farris, so writer/director Zach Creger is obviously a queer ally, but Matthew is not on screen long enough to express any same-sex interests (besides, the rule in movies is, all kids must be portrayed as heterosexual). But maybe Luke Speakman is gay in real life.
Left: Luke's birthday in April 2025: "Turned 12 today! Guess I'm old now!" Just wait, buddy.
Growing up in a heteronormative society, gay boys are often unaware that they like boys, or interpret their interest as friendship or hero worship. And if they are aware, they are unlikely to mention it on their parent-curated social media pages. But maybe we can catch some glimmers of same-sex interest to augment Luke's femme appearance.
Born in Athens, Georgia in 2013, Luke began acting on screen at age five, in Steven Spielberg's Amazing Stories (2020): he plays the young version of Sam (Dylan O'Brien, n*de on RG Beefcake and Boyfriends), who goes through a time portal to the 1920s and meets Girl of His Dreams (be careful, she could be your great-grandmother).
Next came seven episodes of the podcast series The Burned Photo (2021-22): two women's "lives become intertwined when they discover they are being terrorized by the same multi-generational curse that is determined to end their family lineages." So some lesbian subtexts going on?
Five episodes of Lost Man Down (2022), about an aspiring actor masquerading as a talent agent. Luke plays a baseball fan who believes in aspiring player Takeshi (Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, center). The guy with them is not Tsuyoshi's boyfriend. I don't think.
An episode of Young Rock (2023), with Uli Latukefu portraying wrestler Dwayne Johnson in his early years. Luke's character isn't mentioned in the plot synopsis, but on his Instagram he is happy that he met Uli and his biceps. Wouldn't you be?
The Invisible Raptor (2023): A paleontologist and a museum security guard (both men, for a change) team up to fight a...well, an invisible raptor. Sounds like a gay-subtext buddy bond.
Christmas with the Jerks (2023): Christmas romcom with a former child star (Leanne Adams) expecting to find solitude in her sister's supposedly-empty house, but it's occupied by an injured stuntman, Ace Strong (Tyler Buckingham, left). Luke plays the young Ace:"Had a blast and made new friends."
Paradise (2025) is totally heteronormative: Luke falls in love with Ella Grace Helton. Her parents, Brandon Helton and Lee Nessl, play the two as grownups, having embraced the heterosexist trajectory.
But check out the upcoming John Money (2026), about the 1960s sexologist who thought that gender identity was malleable at an early age.
When Bruce Reimar's p*nis was accidentally cut off during a routine circumcision, Dr. Money advised the parents, Janet and Rob (Zaramok Bachok, n*de on RG Beefcake and Boyfriends), to give him a "s--e--x change"He further tried to prime Brenda's female heterosexual desire with "s*xual rehearsal play" with his twin brother Brian.
But Brenda never identified as a girl -- you can't change someone's gender identiy with surgery and dresses.
And he was not attracted to boys. You can't change someone's s*xual identity with rehearsals, as every gay guy forced to date girls in high school can attest.
Finally, when Brenda threatened self-harm unless his parents stopped taking him to Dr. Money, they allowed him to reverse the s*x reassignment and change his name from Brenda to David.
Você não quer ser como as outras garotas? (Don't you want to be like the other girls?)
Luke: No. I want to be me.
This is every LGBT person's story, forced into the wrong gender or s*xual identity by parents, teachers, peers, and Saturday morning cartoons, searching desperately for hints, piecing together the truth, and finally breaking free.
More about Luke: his favorite food is spaghetti
And he likes capybaras (but this is an iguana).
