Jinn: The Archie gang in Jordan, with a gay drug dealer, a Bedouin boy, a demonic being, and an ancient city.

In Episode 1 of the Netflix Arabic-language tv series Jinn (2019), a group of high school students sets out from Riverdale...um, I mean Amman, Jordan...on a field trip to Petra, the famous archaeological site.

Nasser/Reggie (Mohammed Nizar) has just broken up with Veronica/Mira.

"How do you spell provocative."
"R-E-G-G-I-E."

So you think he's hot, Arch?

Fahed/Archie (Yasser al Hadi) is dating good girl Betty/Layla.

Hassan/Dilton (Zaid Zoubi) is a frizzy-haired know-it-all.

In just seven days, I can make you a man....

Yassim (Sultan Alkhail) is a bullied good boy.  Sorry, I couldn't think of an Archie equivalent.

More after the break

At Petra, the Good Boy runs afoul of:

Tareq/Fangs Fogarty (Abdelrazzaq Jarkas), a belligerent drug dealer.

And Omar (Mohammed Hidieh), his  gay-coded sidekick/boyfriend.

At Petra, the drug dealers and Nasser/Reggie beat up the Good Boy.  He runs away and falls into a pit, but the mysterious Vera rescues him.  And wants to become his new girlfriend.

That night, as boy/girl couples pair off for sexual shenanigans, someone throws Drug Dealer Tareq off a cliff to his death.  Ya think it might be the Good Boy and his new girlfriend, out for revenge?

When they return to Amman, a mysterious boy in an old-fashioned Bedouin costume comes through Veronica/Mira's window.  His name is Kerasquoixian, Keras for short (Hamzeh Okab, top photo, with his boyfriend).

Keras has come from the other realm to warn Mira that an evil jinn has been unleashed, with a murderous hatred of all humans.  They must find its summoner (the person who called it from the other realm) to push it back, or other jinn will be released, and everyone will die.

At a memorial service for  Drug Dealer Tareq, Nasser/Reggie pulls out a knife, says "We don't belong in this world," and slits his own throat.

Two of the three bullies who harassed Yassir.  Do you have any idea who the jinn and its summoner are?

Meanwhile, Hassan/Dilton returns to Petra to look for clues about the jinn.

And the Drug Dealer's Boyfriend, Omar investigates on his own.  The Bedouin Boy looks like a missing Bedouin named Hosny, who went missing several months ago.  Is this jinn stuff the delusion of a boy driven mad in the desert ?

There are some game changers, some "Wow, I never thought that you were a jinn!" moments, and a pleasant cliff-hanging ending.

Heterosexism: The jinn and the summoner are always male-female, and the jinn always wants to "unite" with the summoner so they can "be together forever."  Sounds like a heterosexual union to me.

On the other hand, Veronica/Mira and the Bedouin Boy don't seem to be attracted to each other.

Beefcake: Yassir takes his shirt off while he's in the pit.

Gay subtexts:  Drug Dealer Tareq and Omar are quite obviously boyfriends.  During the investigation, Omar buddy-bonds with the Bedouin Boy.

Gay actor: Hamzeh Okab, the Bedouin Boy, is gay and out.  Some of the other actors are shown hugging guys on their Instagram and Facebook pages.

Jordanian scener
y:  A lot of Petra, not much Amman.

My grade: A-.
