Akuma Kun: The Chosen One and his canonical boyfriend investigate paranormal problems in a soggy, decaying neighborhood.

Akuma Kun (2023), on Netflix, drew my interest because of its excellent animation, all soggy, decaying opulence, and because of its blatant buddy bond between the two paranormal investigators.  Most of the anime we see on streaming services expect you to have known and loved the characters throughout your life, after buying the hundreds of manga, video games, comic strips, and tie-in toys and going to fan conventions to meet the stars of the live-action movies, but I'm going in fresh, with no research.  Episode 1.1: "Demons."

Scene 1
:  A shabby office full of old furniture, books, papers, and weird bricabrac.  A big-headed boy named Mephisto complains that a lanky, gray-haired boy summoned him to deal with a toilet clog, and then ate all of his ramen!

"It would have gotten soggy just sitting there, so I ate it," the boy responds, his nose stuck in a book.

"If you want me to come over, why don't you call me on the telephone instead using a summoniing spell?"

"You come faster this way."

"But I'm half human, half demon, so I never cross over properly."  So Mephisto has been roped into becoming the Boy's servant, like a genie in a bottle?

The Boy is named Ichiro Umoregi, and titled Akuma Kun.  Akuma is translated "Demon," but it refers to any type of supernatural being, and Kun is a diminuitive used for close friends and little boys, so "Little Demon."  He is actually an adult -- everyone in this anime is drawn as a child.  He is voiced by Yuki Kaji, top photo in Japanese, Michael Johnston, left, in English, and Aidan Vallejo, below, in Spanish.  Both Michael and Aidan are gay.

Scene 2: Night.  A young college student walks down a dark, deserted street.  Suddenly a shadowy monster with glowing red eyes attacks!

Cut to a young woman named Hina walking toward the Millenarianism Research Institute.  So a cult?  Up a flight of wooden stairs to a courtyard with scary, ornate doors beyond.   She enters a drawing room cluttered with creepy skeletons and skull candleholders. Mephisto enters from the kitchen, exclaims "We have a client!  We can pay the rent!", and changes into a purple suit with a top hat and magician's cane.

So they live together?  Then why does the Boy need to summon Mephisto?

Hina's case:  Two of her college classmates died two nights ago, at exactly 2:23 am.  And she discovered that three other people in the Kamichoufu Sector also died at the same moment.  Also, she's been plagued by nightmares.

Scene 3:
They arrive at Hina's house to conduct some research.  The Boy immediately goes to her bedroom, angering her mother: "You can't just barge into a lady's room!  It's rude!"

"Is this how your partner usually behaves?" Hina asks.

"He is a once-in-10,000 years genius, but he's sort of lacking in social skills." I'd put him on the autism spectrum.  The English, French, and Spanish voice actors speak in a monotone.

Mom recovers from her shock and brings them tea, but the Boy demands hotcakes ( hottokÄ“ki), not pancakes (pankÄ“ki).  He needs the sugar to get his brain cells active.  "Ok...um...I'll make you some hotcakes, I guess."  Ok, a little research.  Hotcakes are thicker than Western pancakes, with a custard-like texture.

Scene 4
: The Boy rates the hotcakes the 18th best that he's had.

Mom is a professor of European history.  The Boy has read her book, Lives and Sins of Kings, and found her interpretation of the Medieval monarchy "banal."  Way to insult your hostess, kid.

Hina tells them that the murdered people were all college students, but some went to other universities, and one had just graduated.

While Mephisto tries to discuss payment with Hina, the Boy looks under the bed  and sees a red-eyed monster.  No one else can see it.  He draws a mysterious Eye in the Pyramid on a scrap of paper and tells her to keep it close.  They'll be back tomorrow.

Scene 5: That night, while Hina is asleep, a red-eyed monster sneaks out from under the bed, but she holds up the Eye, and it vanishes.

Scene 6: Kamichoufou Odeon Cinema, a run-down theater near the Boy's office.  Hina tells him about the monster.  He suggests that someone is trying to keep them from investigating the case.

When he pinppoints the locations of the deaths on a map, it creates a pentagram.  So someone is trying to protect the person or thing in the center.  Hina recognizes the building: it's the home of her college friend Ichika.

As they approach the house, Hina reveals that her friend didn't know any of the murder victims, except as faces in the cafeteria.  She belonged to a club with a "seedy" reputation. And she hasn't come to class in weeks.

The Boy suddenly decides not to go in. "Come by the Research Institute tomorrow."

That night the red-eyed monster appears again, but Hina has laminated the Eye and tied it to her wrist, so it can't attack. She doesn't even wake up.

"The Bondsman": Kevin Bacon fights demons, sings country-western music, trunks Tater. With Kevin's d*ck and Will Robinson's muscles

A bail bond service will pay your bail, so you can stay out of jail while awaiting your trial.  If you don't show up, the service loses that money, so they hire a bail bondsman to track you down.  Regulations differ from state to state, but generally bail bondsmen cannot carry guns, enter property without permission, or use force to arrest the bail jumper.

But not this Bondsman, played by Kevin Bacon in the new paranormal drama on Amazon Prime.

Link to the d*cks and muscles

Left: Kevin being spanked in 1979

Scene 1:
Night.  A pick-up truck drives down a desolate highway in rural Georgia and stops at the Holiday Hotel -- the kind where the rooms open right onto the parking spots, where you used to stay before the Holiday Inns took over.

Left: Kevin about to get sliced and diced in 1980

The Bondsman looks at a photo of his target, - wraps his gun belt around his waist (nice crotch shot) -- and bangs on the hotel room door.

The guy inside yells for him to "F*ck off," so he he puts a hornet's nest in the air conditioning duct, and when the guy rushes out, nabs him.

But he's not the target, he's Billy Earle (Daniel Norris), who's supposed to be in prison.

The tip was a fake, to lure him to the hotel!  Billy's brother appears out of nowhere and shoots the Bondsman across the parking lot, then slits his throat.  He dies a very bloody death.  Wait -- if it was a set up, why did Billy hide out inside the hotel room?  Shouldn't he be waiting to ambush the Bondsman the moment he gets out of his car?

Scene 2: The extremely dead Bondsman comes back to life, interred behind the dry wall in a hotel room.  He pushes through and examines the gaping hole in his neck.   Better start wearing ascots, buddy.

Tater (Mike Kaye) comes in, talking on the phone about how hardcore the Earle Brothers are, and his parents are starting to charge him rent.  He screams; the Bondsman knocks him to the ground.

He explains that the Earle Brothers hired him to burn down the hotel for the insurance money, but he didn't know there was an undead body inside.

The Bondsman handcuffs him, shoves him in the trunk of his car, covers his neck hole with duct tape, and drives away.

Scene 3: The Bondsman driving recklessly down a two-lane highway.  I guess if you're dead, it doesn't matter.   He arrives at Halloran Bail Bonds, located in a gas station in Landry, "a fictional town brimming with cases of demonic possession"

Phone message: He' s joined the Pot o'Gold Corporate Family.  Pot o'Gold is the title of the episode, so it must be important.

Leaving the whimpering Tater in the trunk, the Bondsman goes to the bathroom and checks his neck hole -- it's healed.

Scene 3: He rushes over to the house across the street and tells his Mama that he needs to find the Earle Brothers right away -- "Ugh, what's he doing here?" It's Pastor Ron (Dave Macomber), who kicked Mama out of the church.  She can come back, if the Bondsman stops detaining skips during the services.  Are there a lot of bail jumpers who go to Sunday services in Landry?

Mama: The Earle Brothers got out of jail; their bail was posted by Lucky Callahan, who is dating the Bondsman's ex-wife.  Mama hates the "damn Yankee"; she won't have her grandson raised by a Boston Red Socks fan!   So Lucky posted the Earle Brothers' bail and hired them to kill the Bondsman just so he wouldn't get back together with his ex?  That's a big grudge.

Scene 4: Dang it, let Tater out of that trunk!    The Bondsman forges Lucky's name on an arrest warrant.  Another robocall from Pot o"Gold!  He unplugs his phone, but they are calling all of his cell phones, too.

Next the Bondsman puts some murder and body-disposal tools in the trunk with Tater and drives to a nightclub, The Boxcar ("Hog Roast Hoe Down Next Week!").   Lucky's car is outside: "Boston Red Sox Fans."

The joint is huge on the inside.  Ex-Wife Maryanne (Jennifer Nettles) is singing "When Will I Be Loved," by Linda Ronstadt:

I've been cheated, been mistreated.  When will I be loved?

I've been put down, I've been pushed 'round. When will I be loved?

She sings the entire song -- the high point of the episode.

Suddenly Hub spots Red Sox Fan Lucky, and follows him through the kitchen, past the line cook (Brandon Alston, left) into the back:

Marcus Hodson: Shape-shifting demon or hyper-masculine Midlands model? With n*de merman bonus

 Link to the NSFW version

On Dead Hot (2024), Marcus Hodson plays a shape-shifting demon, a hermetic Magus who travels between esoteric realms through the Eye of Horus bar and its mysterious Red Phone.  I wanted to know if he plays other mysterious Pucks or Lords of Misreason, but his IMDB listing is rather basic  Five roles, all 2022-2024:

You Like That, a short about a gay American student in Edinburgh.

The Stand-up Sketch Show, where comedians perform "a surreal reconstruction of their own material."  Marcus is a background player in five episodes.

An episode of Domino Day, about a young witch "haunted by her need to feed on others." In Episode 2, Marcus plays a hookup who smooches with her and is eaten.

Gentleman in Moscow
is about a Russian aristocrat placed under house arrest in a hotel for the rest of his life after the 1917 revolution.  He befriends a girl who also lives in the hotel; Marcus plays her piano teacher.

He also plays one of the mermen in The Little Mermaid.

Only one other paranormal show, and he doesn't even play a supernatural being?

Not many biographical details available. A 2021 article in Pause magazine states that he is 25 years old, from Manchester but living in London. He began modeling at age 18, then started university, but left to go pro.

In spite of the paucity of biographical details, Marcus has a very active social media presence, with hundreds of posts about travel, food, and beefcake. Here he is in Greece

In Rome

On the beach.  Does Marcus have a palsy disorder in his left hand, or is he displaying some magickal gestures?

Cracow Monster: Bisexual "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" in a Rain-Drenched Poland

Cracow Monsters (2022) sounds like a Polish version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: a teacher and his students, notably the Chosen One, fight demons.  Poland is the home of the "no gays allowed" cities, so there won't be any gay characters.  But maybe there will be some subtexts.

Scene 1: A scuzzy-looking, greasy-haired yooung woman roams a sleazy black-and-white bar, guzzling other people's drinks.  She approaches a scuzzy, dirty-haired guy, who asks if she's in med school: only med students drink that much.

She hasn'd decided who she's going to sleep with tonight, so he offers to help: "Do you like boys or girls?"  Whoa, recognition that gay people exist in the first minute!  She hasn't decided that yet, either.  She goes onto the dance floor and kisses a girl, then a boy, then flashes back to a memory of yelling while her mother drove erratically.

Scene 2:
The woman -- Alex -- awakens in bed, being screwed by a monster.  Then she wakes up again, next to her actual bed partner (a cute boy), takes some pills, and goes to the kitchen to eat.  Still a black-and-white world.

Her roommate wonders why she is awake at 3:00 am. She snarls "Don't psychoanalyze me.  I'm broken.  You can't fix me.  Let me just lose myself in sex and drugs."  She goes back to the bedroom, starts screaming, and orders the boy in her bed out -- NOW!  (Some chest and back shots as he rushes out).

She settles down to studying her Forensic Psychology textbook (in English).  Close up of the cover blurb:  author Jon Zawordski (Andrjez Chyra, left) is famous, innovative, and so on.

Scene 3: Alex, who still hasn't washed her hair or cleaned the makeup stains from her face, is in a grocery store, getting her morning coffee.  She sees a homeless boy trying to return empty bottles for the deposit -- unsuccessfully -- and buys him a hot dog.  Just to demonstrate that she's nice as well as crazy.  Then it's off to the university in the rain. At least we have color!

A giant lecture hall to take the entrance exam for getting into Professor Zaworski's class.  The Hot Teaching Assistant criticizes her for being a freshman.

Scene 4: A giant construction zone.  It's raining; workers dig in the mud.  (The homeless boy walks past in the rain, for no apparent reason).  The workers find a weird three-legged statue.  The foreman grabs it, hears weird chanting, and takes it away.  Reminds me of the Warner Brothers cartoon "One Froggy Evening," where a constrution worker finds a box containing a singing frog.  But it only sings for him.

Scene 5
: Zaworski's huge, book-lined office.  Hot Teaching Assistant (Stanislaw Linowski) has graded all the tests; no one of interest.  But Zaworski is drawn to Alex's test (of course -- otherwise be lousy story).  They google her: and find a hot  shirtless guy narrating a paranormal tv show:  As a little girl, Alex survived a horrific auto accident, and was trapped in the car with her mother's corpse for several days.  Later, she survived another accident at the beach, where five other kids drowned.  Is she cursed?  Sounds like the opposite to me.

Zaworski rushes to catch up to Alex (she's just leaving?), but a scary skinless humanoid being stands in his way.

Meanwhile, the foreman drives away with the scary three-legged statue.

Scene 6: Zaworski leafing through an old book (why are they never modern paperbacks?  There are over 60,000 paperback books on the occult advertised on Amazon.)   He comes to a demon named Aitvaras, which looks like a humanoid salamander. He smiles.

Meanwhile, Alex comes across a picture of her mother and burns it with a cigarette.  Not very close to Mom, were you?

Scene 7: Zaworski goes into Hunky Teaching Assistant's bedroom to wake him up  (beefcake in black underwear).  "Has something happened?"  Zaworski just stares.  "No -- it can't be! You promised me that last time would be the end of it!"

Scene 8: Alex at the sleazy bar, still allergic to shampoo.  Tonight she cruises a girl. but when Hunky Teaching Assistant comes in, the potential trick flees. If he's a demon-slayer, does that mean that she was a demon?  Oh, well, he's hot, he'll do.

They go for a drive.  Suddenly Hunky Teaching Assistant revvs the motor and bails, leaving Alex trapped in the passenger seat.  The car goes off a cliff!  Alex almost drowns, but she is rescued by the salamander-demon Aitvaras.

Scene 9: Alex awakens in her bed , wondering if it was a dream.  Uh-oh, the Dean has summoned her.  But it's good news: she's been accepted into Zaworski's study group.  All of the students live together, so she has to move.

Alex calls her grandma to tell her about the study group, but Grandma isn't impressed: "Evil has awakened.  Leave Krakow!  It's not safe!"

Scene 10: Zaworski's scary mansion.  HunkyTeaching Assistant answers the door.  She interrogates him about the murder attempt last night, but he claims that she just passed out from drugs.

A long-haired hippie chick examines her height, eyes, and hands, and says "You'll do."  She leads Alex up some stairs and through a museum to her room.

Scene 10:
Alex is awakened by a humanoid with a giant hole instead of a face.  Then she wakes up for real.  Just a dream!  But there are claw marks on her neck and shoulders.

She goes downstairs.  The other members of the study group are noshing in the kitchen.  Isn't it the middle of the night?  Gigi (Daniel Namiotka, left), tries to kiss  stringy-haired boy, who moves away.  Then a cleancut boy (Stanislaw Cywka, top photo), who just laughs.   Gay, or trying to upset them by rousing their homophobia? Check to see if Gigi is a girl's name in Poland.

Hippie Chick invites Alex to join in their game, analyzing their nightmares for clues to their past lives.  This reminds me of the group of sleep-deprived kids  in Nightmare on Elm Street 2.  One of whom is gay.  Maybe Gigi is gay, too.    Alex isn't up for it, and leaves.

Scene 11: Alex, in her room, overhears Hunky Teaching Assistant talking to Zawordski.  "I've never seen anything like it!"  Zawordski: "She's our ninth.  We can begin."  Wait -- I thought they weren't planning on "it" happening again?   "Just don't scare here away."

But Alex is scared away.  She rushes out into the rain-drenched street.   Well, that's what you get for discussing your diabolical plan right in front of her door.  Hunky Teaching Assistant goes after her.

She comes across the Homeless Boy standing in the rain, chanting in Old Church Slavonic (like Latin).  He runs; she chases him through the deserted streets. into a graffiti-filled building, and up some stairs into a deserted apartment.  Except for a monster with a death's head and bat wings, which attacks the boy.   Fortunately, water makes it burst into flame  (maybe Krakow, where it's always raining, was the wrong place to manifest, Demon?).  She pulls down the water pipes and kills it.

The boy is catatonic.  Alex yells "Wake up!" and desperately performs CPR while the salamander demon looks on.  The end.

Beefcake:  Some guys with their shirts off and in underwear.

Other Sights:  Mostly dark sets, blue-black darkness, and pouring rain.  Very unpleasant.

Gay Characters:  Alex starts off as bisexual, but 100 to 1 she only sleeps with Hot Teaching Assistant from now on.  I don't know about Gigi (Polish for "Grandma").

Will I Keep Watching:  Maybe to see if there are any more gay references.
