Toby Huss: Artie The Strongest Man in the World, The Wiz, Dot's Dad, and other iconic figures. Plus an interest in men

 I thought I had covered all of the male stars of The Righteous Gemstones, but I skipped over Toby Huss.

He played Dale Nancy of Fancy Nancy's Chicken, a parody of the notoriously homophobic Andrew Cathy of Chick Fil-A.  Dale's daughter Dot has gone over to the dark side, and it's up to Kelvin and Keefe to bring her to the light.  Kelvin goes to Dot's lacrosse practice to invite her to a teen party, causing many fans to conclude that he was interested in her, and their affair would become the big conflict of the season. Actually, she helps him reconcile with Keefe when they break up.

I was surprised to discover that Tony Huss also voiced Cambodian immigrant Kahn Souphanousinphone (and several other characters) on the Texas-redneck show King of the Hill (1997-2005).  In the 2025 sequel, he voices conspiracy theorist and ne'er-do-well Dale Gribble.

Plus he played Jack "The Wiz," a tv store mascot whom Elaine falls for because of his smile in a 1997 episode of Seinfeld.

And Artie The Strongest Man in the World in the bizarre Nickelodeon teencom The Adventures of Pete and Pete (1992-94).

Toby was born in 1966 in Marshalltown, Iowa, and attended the University of Iowa before moving to Los Angeles. 

One of his first acting gigs was a series of promos for MTV in the early 1990s: he played various bizarre characters. such as lounge lizard Ol' Two Eyes and fundamentalist preacher Tex Stoneheadbottom.  One of his characters, Artie, moved onto Pete and Pete, and soon developed a life of his own, with a parody workout video and a self-promoting biopic.

He has nearly 200 acting listings on the IMDB, with movies ranging from : The Basketball Diaries to Halloween (the 2018 version) to Beavis and B* tt-Head Do the Universe to The Four Seasons.

Guest spots on everything from Shameless to Bob's Burgers.

A dozen starring roles:

Nikki (2000-02) featured Nikki Cox and Nick von Esmarch as a couple trying to make it in Las Vegas as a dancer and a wrestler, respectively.  Toby played Nick's wrestling manager.

Carnivale (2003-05) was set in a traveling carnival during the Great Depression.  Toby played Stumpy Dreifuss, who runs a gentlemen's show

Coach Doug on Sin City Saints (2015), with Andrew Santino as a basketball player in Las Vegas.

John Bosworth on Halt and Catch Fire (2014-17) which in spite of the misleading title, is not about war, it's about the personal computer revolution of the 1980s and 1990s (why the heck would you give a show about computers a title about people catching on fire?) .  

The father of poet Emily Dickinson in the comedy-drama Dickinson (2019-21)
