Peacemaker, Episode 3.7: In a fascist parallel Earth (sort of), Judomaster comes out, and Vigilante finds his soul mate. With bonus Vietnamese guys

Nhut Le has returned as the Supervillain Judomaster in Season 2 of Peacemaker, the DC Comics series about inept superheroes.  He's gay in real life, so I'm reviewing Episode 2.7, "Like a Keith in the Night," to see if there's any evidence that his character is gay.

Title: A parody of "Like a thief in the night," a reference to the Rapture.

Back Story: Washed-up superhero Peacemaker (John Cena) is mourning his dead brother, and the fact he had to kill his evil white-surpremacist supervillain father.  He stumbles through an interdimensional vortex in his father's house to a parallel world where Peacemaker is a hero, Dad is nice, and Brother Keith is still alive.

After accidentally killing that world's Peacemaker, he decides to stay.  He even tracks down this world's counterpart of the lady who wants to be Just Friends, and guess what?  She's in love with this world's Peacemaker!  He's got it made!

But in Episode 2.6, his friends (and an enemy) come to retrieve him.  Just Friends finds him at ARGUS Headquarters, where she discovers that this is a white-supremacist Nazi-dominated United States (I'm not commenting).  She wonders why Peacemaker didn't get a clue from the swastika on American flags and Mein Kampf on every desk.  Answer: He's not very bright.

Scene 1: Peacemaker's buddy, the superhero Vigilante (Freddie Stroma), meets his  this world-counterpart (Kellen Boyle), and they bond over superhero gossip.  He mentions that he belongs to the Sons of Liberty, a resistance movement to the fascist state.

"Wait -- the Nazis won World War II here?"

"So the Allies won in your world?  You must live in a utopia!"  Um...do you want to tell him, or should I?

Suddenly Vigilante remembers that one of the friends he came with is black.  They have to find her before she gets grabbed and sent to a concentration camp!

Cut to Leota being chased by an angry mob.  They chase her into a pool.  Judomaster rescues her, and electrocutes the mob (or you could just fly away with her.  Oh, right -- you're a villain).

Cut to Peacemaker and Just Friends trying to escape.  They're surrounded, so he grabs her and flies her out -- ineptly.

Scene 2:
Peacemaker's Dad (Robert Patrick) calls to tell Brother Keith (David Denman, left) to get home fast -- he's got Economos, a guy from a parallel world, tied up in the living room.

"I'm just a casual thief who got caught, and made up a story," he claims.  They don't believe him.  They also know that their Peacemaker is dead, replaced by the one from his world,  "a dark version of ours."

Brother Keith ran into Just Friends earlier, and complains that she must be from that other world, too: "She was wearing...ugh..pants, and she never heard of Helloween!"

"Ok, we have to round up and kill all of the intruders from the Dark World."

Scene 3
: Judomaster takes Leota to a safe house -- one where the owners are out of town -- and explains that they are in a parallel world, with the portal in Peacemaker's father's house.

"What's up with this place?" Leota asks  "I just went for a walk, and got chased by an angry mob."

"The Nazis won World War II.  You don't want to be a minority here...or Buddhist...or gay...or anything I am, really.  Also, Cheetohs end with an h here, and they aren't nearly as good."  Ok, he's gay, in a blink-and-you miss it throwaway line tucked in with a joke about Cheetos.

"So what do we do now?"

"Wait till nightfall, find your friends, and sneak into Peacemaker's father's house, and go through the portal to get home."

While waiting, they play Scrabble (Scrobble in this world), and discuss Leota's problems with her girlfriend., and how much Judomaster hates Peacemaker, "jingoistic garbage person."

"If you open your mind a little, you'll find out that he's really a sweet guy."

More after the break

Scene 4: As they escape, Just Friends cuddles into Peacemaker and holds his hand.  She's into him now, so I'll call her Girlfriend.   They're cut off by a dozen police cars.  Officers emerge with guns drawn -- but then the cars explode, they're all zapped, and superhero rescuers pop in with their world's poor equivalent of "Come with me if you want to live."

Meanwhile, in a warehouse, guards emerge with Happerson (Stephen Blackeheart), who "literally wrote the book on dimensional interconnectivity," but threw it away to work with Luthor (this world's Lex Luthor, Superman's arch rival?  Is there a Nazi Superman running around?  Maybe that's why the Axis won the War).

This is Lex Luthor's abandoned headquarters. They want the inmate to charge up the machines and find interdimensional rifts.

He scans, and finds an open portal in Evergreen, Washington.  "Great. Smiley, get the coordinates to Fleury." No Smiley in the cast list, but he may be Bryan Bachman (below).  Fleury is an Our World ARGUS agent played by Tim Meadows (backside on RG Beefcake and Boyfriends). So this is Peacemaker's home dimension.  Nice to mention that.

Scene 5
: The Superhero Rescuers turn out to be Brother Keith and Dad, who bring Peacemaker and Girlfriend back to the house with the interdimensional portal. Economus is still tied up in the dining room.

They want to know why Peacemaker came in and started impersonating their loved one.  He explains that it was all an accident, and he stuck around because "I wanted to know what it was like to have a family."

Dad: "Ok, we're not going to kill you, but when your other friends arrive, you're going through the portal to your own world, and never coming back!"

Brother Keith: "No, we have to kill them.  Their Peacemaker killed my brother (this world's Peacemaker)!"

Uh-oh, the police arrive.  Larry Fitzgibbon (Lochlan Munro): "Your son was involved in some violence at ARGUS today.  Can we come in and look around?"

"Nope, go get a warrant.  Now get out."

Scene 6
: Judomaster, Leota, and the two Vigilantes congregate on a hill overlooking the house.  They watch the dozen or so police cars outside.

"What's that symbol on your chest," Nazi World Vigilante asks.  "It looks like someone had s*x with you."

"Why do you to have s*x with me?" Judomaster asks.

Our World Vigilante: "He doesn't, and if he did, it would be as a joke."

The Supervillains want to kill all the cops, but Leota suggest that they just sneak into the house.

Scene 7: Dad and Brother Keith continue to argue about whether they should kill Our World's Peacemaker and his friends.

Dad explains that he's not a Nazi and doesn't agree with their policies, but he can't do anything about it, so he uses his superhero powers to do what he can, fight monsters and mad scientists.  At that moment, Judomaster explodes into the room and kills him!   "But he wasn't a Nazi!" Peacemaker exclaims.

The police are drawn by the explosion.  The Vigilantes come out shooting, and kill a lot of them.  The others rush to the study, open the portal, and...Brother Keith, angry over the death of his father and brother, ambushes Peacemaker!  The others pull him away and attack until Peacemaker yells for them to stop. He just saw his father killed for the second time, and now his brother!

"This is me.  Everything I touch dies."

The others pull him into the portal.

Brother Keith is still alive, and will come looking for revenge.

Scene 8:  When the get home, agents have the house surrounded.  Peacemaker says that his friends had nothing to do with it, so they go free while he is arrested for possession and use of a dangerous scientific device.  The end.

Beefcake: None.

Gay Characters:
Judomaster mentions that he is gay -- apparently this was first time, so it is his coming-out moment.  But it's just a throwaway phrase, like Loki's "a little of both."  He doesn't get a boyfriend or express any gay romantic interest.  Even the "s*x with me" quip is an expression of surprise rather than desire. But since Peacemaker is bisexual (again with throwaway lines, no romance), and Leota is a lesbian, there probably won't be any room for more.

I couldn't find any n*de photos of Nhut Le, so here are some random Vietnamese guys on RG Beefcake and Boyfriends.

My Grade:  It was a little hard to follow, probably because I was coming in toward the end of a story arc, and I didn't like the random acts of 15 people being incinerated.  The ending was a bit of a downer.  But two gay characters in a superhero series is quite an accomplishment.  B-
